Rami Malek as a socially challenged and somewhat troubled hacker type

And there is conspiracy up the patoot. This has the vibe of a French
movie/TV show. Anarchists may like it. I doubt this will be a success
for USA, but what do I know. All of USA's new shows the past couple
years have been darker with flawed characters hard to care about (see
Graceland and last year's whoring show I didn't bother with). Gone are
the characters we liked and loved in White Collar and Burn Notice.
Gone is fun and whimsy.

This is what I miss, what I call my "summer fun shows." I think Monk
started the run of shows I enjoyed on USA.

Yes, and then Burn Notice, Psych and White Collar followed. As poorly
as USA's new shows have performed, one has to wonder why they didn't
go back to the formula that worked. They had a pilot a couple years
ago set in Las Vegas with Jennifer Finnegan that was whimsical and
enjoyable, but they didn't pick it up. It has to be the suits.

I never watched Psych for some reason, but I loved the other three shows
you mentioned, and I enjoyed Covert Affairs as well.

I think I've seen stories about both USA's and TNT's new directions, and
I believed they both used the same word: they want "edgier" fare. The
story on TNT even quoted a rep saying that some of their current viewers
wouldn't like some of their new shows.

I enjoy some more "serious" or "adult" fare (although I loathe the very
idea of USA's Complications, which I imagine is what you referred to as
USA's "whoring show" in a part of your post that I snipped).

But there's a special place in my heart for these light dramas with
enjoyable characters that are just fun to watch ...

See my other post - they're all trying to copy FX. But you can't copy
what someone else is doing, and expect to be successful.

USA has already destroyed their brand. I'm disappointed to hear that it
sounds like TNT is about to do the same thing... >:|

This is the quote from Kevin Reilly, president of TBS and TNT and chief
content officer for Turner Entertainment, in a story David posted:

Reilly's plans for TNT call for a shift in the focus and tone of its
original programming. "TNT will continue to deliver great drama and
live event specials, but our presentation and portfolio will look
dramatically different," he said. "As we expand our portfolio, viewers
should expect some very daring shows – some of which will not appeal
to all of our current viewers but will be a lightning rod to attract
new viewers."

I don't think I've ever heard a network rep say that people wouldn't
like their new shows.

Kevin Reilly is an idiot. He was in charge of an NBC soap at one point
and some of the worst shows were produced during that time period. He
destroyed the characters and the ratings.

That does seem like a strange admission. I'm sure what he meant was
that the new programs might not all be instantly appealing to their
current audience, but in time their current audience will grow to
embrace them even as a new audience adds to the overall mass appeal of
their network.

If TNT used to show 2 nights of original drama, 2 nights of sports, and
the rest of the schedule was filled with reruns, I'm all for a change in
direction that brings more new programming to the network. Leading
cable networks should be trying to fill their hours with original
offerings (adding more than one genre to their scripted offerings and
even reality TV is better than syndicated reruns). Let the old reruns
play out on the lesser cable channels and broadcast sub-channels and on
the various streaming services.

Maybe Reilly meant, "I would speak in metaphor and allegory but the current brain-dead audience wouldn't have a clue what I am talking about"

Or maybe he meant, "This new show is social commentary disguised as science fiction"

Watch the first 2 minutes, you'll see what I mean. (PS: Also bone-up on the news, because social commentary as sci-fi is very difficult to decypher without any real-world knowledge)

So he's another idiot who thinks that his channel can be all things to
all people? Maybe he should look at what the network was doing back when
it was good and relevant and build on *that* knowledge instead of going
after "daring" viewers.

Oh, well. I hope that he expects to gain more viewers with the new crap
than he's losing by alienating some of his existing viewers or he's just
piling stupid on top of stupid.

He's basically flipping the bird to his existing audience, it seems. "We
like you, but not as much as the 'daring' people that we're going after
now."

"I'm great, I think. I haven't been able to get ahold of anybody since I
got here, and I can't leave. And the only reason that I'm here is
because I was sent here to find you and Bill Evans. And guess what? I
found both of you. Only you're working in a toy store and living in a
house with a picket fence and a man named Harold, and Bill Evans's
mutilated corpse is rotting in an abandoned house on the outskirts of
town, which I found a little bit surprising. But other than that, I
couldn't be happier." -- Ethan Burke, WAYWARD PINES

If fewer peeps are going to watch the "edgier" stuff, what's the
point? Are they saying "edgier" watchers have more money to spend? I
don't mind edgier as I watch Shameless and other stuff, but I also
like fun type enjoyment which seems lacking these days compared to ye

Yes, thanks that was it. I couldn't remember the name of it and didn't

turn off the first episode part way through.

Rami Malek as a socially challenged and somewhat troubled hacker type
working for a security firm by day and as a do gooder hacker by night.
He does have interesting relationships with 3 women: his shrink, his
coworker, and his drop-in druggie lay with one more on the horizon.
And there is conspiracy up the patoot. This has the vibe of a French
movie/TV show. Anarchists may like it. I doubt this will be a success

Unrelated but sounding very similar

Hackers Wanted
following the adventures of Adrian Lamo. The film is narrated by Kevin Spacey.

Lost Hacking Documentary Surfaces on Pirate Bay

Narrated by actor Kevin Spacey, the 90-minute Hackers Wanted follows the exploits of Adrian Lamo, who pleaded guilty in 2004 to cracking the internal network of The New York Times. The film was produced by Spacey's Trigger Street production company, and includes interviews with Kevin Rose and Steve Wozniak.

What he said.

USA thought it had to ape FX. (See, also: WGN America). They were wrong.

By trying to copy FX, all USA has done is destroy their "brand".
