Hollywood actresses Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman are among 50
people charged in a $25 million college entrance exam cheating scheme,
according to court documents unsealed Tuesday.

The alleged scam focused on getting students admitted to elite
universities as recruited athletes, regardless of their athletic
abilities, and helping potential students cheat on their college exams,
according to the indictment unsealed in Boston.

Authorities said the FBI investigation, code-named Operation Varsity
Blues, uncovered a network of wealthy parents who paid thousands of
dollars to a California man who boosted their childrens' chances of
gaining entrance into elite colleges, such as Yale and Stanford, by
paying people to take tests for their children, bribing test
administrators to allow it to happen, and bribing college coaches and
administrators to identify the applicants as athletes.

"This case is about the widening corruption of elite college admissions
through the steady application of wealth, combined with fraud," said
U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts Andrew Lelling.

"There can be no separate college admission for wealthy, and I will add
there will not be a separate criminal justice system either."

Yes, colleges - liberal-controlled schools and colleges. Don't forget that. Pathological liar.

That's not that unusual for a dorm room. Okay, the lack of A/C is but
this is likely in LA where A/C isn't as common as elsewhere since the
temp is cool enough most of the year to not need it. Don't know if
they have anything special in terms of dorm rooms as in my experience
the only special dorm rooms were the apartments for the married
graduate students. As for the Dyson fans not sure she 'bought' them
since Amazon was hooking her up. That sink is something I've never
seen in a dorm room.

I have to wonder why she had to pay money to get her kid into USC. I
thought that was the state school that almost anyone could get into.
If she's so bad at school that she couldn't get in how is she supposed
to keep her grades up enough to stay in?

UCLA is a state school but there are far more people who want admittance
than they have seats, so no, not everyone can get in. And now that they're
reserving seats specifically for illegals, it's even harder for an American
citizen to attend the university they pay taxes to fund and maintain.

I realized that there was still competition for admission, I just meant
that tuition wasn't going to be an obstacle for most (middle class or
better) people.

Seriously, as her daughter seems to be a silly little git who just wanted to
party, why blow a half million to get her into USC? Doesn't California have
any useless community colleges?

Typically it's done because the parents dote on their little girl and
try to give her anything she wants. Probably a friend was going to USC
so she had to go to USC.

Because there are millions of foreign students who want in to u.s. schools andcwill pay 2x what the domestic price is.
Typically in Canada it's 4x or 5x - which is why I who 40 years ago
graduated #1 in a grad class of 500+ would have difficulty getting
into my alma mater today.

Sure there's been grade inflation but by 2019 standards my grades
would have been marginal while foreign students (mostly from China and
India) grab the spots that belong to local kids and whose parents'
taxes have built and maintained those universities.

I am almost looking forward to the next time my alma mater phones me
looking for a donation so I can give them both barrels. All this is
well documented in recent local newspaper columns by nationally
respected journalists.

Then there are medical schools in Canada. Apparently one-third of the
seats are reserved expressly for foreign students. (That used to be
mostly Saudis but I'm not sure who is in those spots today since the
Saudis pulled all their students from Canada last year.)

Meanwhile, if you want a doctor in this country, you can literally wait
years - I had to use walk-in clinics for several years when I couldn't
find one that was taking new patients - since there simply aren't
enough. That might not be quite the issue it is if there were more
spaces available for domestic students.

Indeed you do. The daughter of the Huawei president is presently
undergoing extradition proceedings here so she can be sent to the US for
prosecution of financial crimes and China has detained two of our
citizens and sentenced a third to death for a crime that previously had
a 15 year sentence, all because China is trying to pressure us to let
her go back to China.

Loughlin is in Canadia shooting some Hallmark movie. The news said the
Canadidians told her that once she leaves to go to the US to be arrested,
she should forget about ever coming back to Canadia. With felony charges on
her record, Canadidian authorities will deny her re-entry. So she's lost
that job, too.

It's worse than just a job. Loughlin stars in a series of films called
Garage Sale Mysteries (there have been fifteen of them during the past
five and a half years) and she does one or two Christmas movies every
year for Hallmark as well. Hallmark usually shoots in Canada.

Once charged, Loughlin *might* not be permitted to re-enter Canada.
She can apply for "special entrance permission." Even a conviction
might not keep her out, at least for long. See here:

http://www.temporaryresidentpermitcanada.com/felony.php

However, Loughlin picked the wrong time to get caught, as the Trudeau
government is currently facing the SNC-Lavalin scandal and isn't likely
to be doing special favors for anybody right now.

Hallmark has plenty of women leads for its various projects, and it's
been grooming more. It won't miss Loughlin too much.

person being discussed was Loughlin?

Speaking of morons... why did you reply with a link to Huffman, when the
person being discussed was Loughlin?
One leftist Hollywood actress is as good as another. It's not like
Loughlin and her husband weren't also regulars at Hillz fundraisers
during the last election. They certainly aren't 'right-wing' as Hutt the

Loughlin is in Canadia shooting some Hallmark movie. The news said
theCanadidians told her that once she leaves to go to the US to be
arrested, she should forget about ever coming back to Canadia. With
felony charges onher record, Canadidian authorities will deny her
re-entry. So she's lost that job, too.

Why don't you get these axioms together in one place? You can call it:

That's the thing I've always liked about Thanny, he's so gracious
in defeat. BTW, Loughlin coughed up half a mil and Huffman paid
fifteen grand, so to use the two interchangeably for any reason
in this story is mindnumbingly stupid, which our Twinkles clearly
is. If he had the class of Alyssa Milano he'd know when to
apologize.

Meanwhile, there is an arrest warrant out for Loughlin, who was out of
town and not at her house when authorities showed up.
She's in Canada at the moment.  Maybe she should stay there for a while.
I believe we have an extradition treaty with Can-er-der...  ;)

Her smart move would be to seek refugee status. Our current prime

ISIS fighters and torturers from various foreign regimes have been
admitted to this country.

It's not up to me. I imagine the government would though. A nice

Money doesn't have a party. Or an ideology.

Liberals are blue, conservatives, red - but when you turn them over,
they're both Green on the bottom, at their core.

Or did you think Donald Trump had his college records sealed away from
sight because he was proud of them?

Not keen on how fast threads here get side-tracked, but people need to remember what happened to two Germany companies back when the U.S. had strong anti-Iraq sanctions. The two Germany companies did what this Chinese company did, they set-up shell companies to export prohibited goods to Iraq. This b---- should go to jail, though I honestly doubt she ever will.

Yes - which is why President Trump generously threw Canada under the
bus while requesting we extradite the Huawei executive to the US.

The appropriate thing to do would have been to have said nothing at
all publicly instead of trying to make it a negotiation.

Unlike President Trump, we believe in the rule of law and that once
the courts have had their say based on the evidence she will either be
freed or placed in a limo and driven to the nearest border crossing as
quickly as possible with NO POLITICIANS BEING FURTHER INVOLVED IN THE
MATTER.

If that results in the Chinese acting out then Canadians will expect
our closest ally to support us 200%.

And as a Canadian let me further say that I am more than a bit fed up
with Chinese nationals who we have admitted to this country staging
demonstrations on how unfairly she's been treated. If this were China
we would cancel their visas immediately and seize any property they
might own in our country.

Meng owns two houses in Vancouver priced between them at $20 million +
and while on bail is living under house arrest in fine style.
Meanwhile China has seized two Canadians, kept them in cells only
giving the Canadian embassy access once a month. They have further
re-tried a convicted drug dealer who was sentenced to 15 years and
issued a death sentence which won't be carried out but is CLEARLY in
the worst example of excesses during the Cultural Revolution.

And China DARES lecture US on unfairness?

Memo to Trump - if you can't do something positive to get our men
home that doesn't involve selling out the Canadian legal system, STFU
and let the wheels of justice grind away.

We're NOT your enemy but PLEASE don't create a technicality that will
force our judges to declare a mistrial or release somebody who doesn't
deserve to be released on a technicality.

Unlike President Trump, we believe in the rule of law
*Most* Canadians believe in the rule of law but you left out some pretty
important exceptions: Prime Minister Trudeau and (former Justice
Minister) Jody Wilson-Raybould. I'm speaking of their odious remarks
after the Gerald Stanley acquittal. (Stanley was charged with murder in
the killing of an Indian named Colten Boushie who invaded his property
with some of his tribesmates, all of them drunk, where they proceeded to
try to steal his vehicles and menace his family.) After the jury found
him not guilty, Trudeau and Wilson-Raybould both made public statements
that the jury made the wrong decision and that they would make changes
to the law to ensure that this wouldn't happen again.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Colten_Boushie

And then, of course, there's the whole SNC-Lavalin affair in which
Trudeau is accused of personally - and with the help of the PMO (Prime
Ministers Office - his top advisers) and the top civil servant - trying
to pressure the Attorney-General to let the international but
Quebec-based engineering firm out of a serious criminal trial with a
plea deal on political grounds. Ironically, the attorney-general was the
same Jody Wilson-Raybould who suddenly found some scruples and decided
that interfering in *this* case was wrong.

Unless of course Trudeau and his new Attorney-General-lapdog decide that
there's an exception to be made here for political reasons.

This sounds, and more importantly, it *feels* like a hanging offense,
but how many parents wouldn't commit it if they could? Way back, we
bought our kid extra prep for the SATs -- entirely contrary to their
spirit -- and were rewarded with a hefty score-increase. Though we ran
no risk of jail time, I can't feel a great moral superiority here...

After reading through the indictment, the good news is, in a couple of years all these kids will qualify for good paying jobs as investment bankers at Goldman Sachs.

The Yale Dad Who Set Off the College-Admissions Scandal
By Jennifer Levitz and Melissa Korn March 14, 2019
https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-yale-dad-who-set-off-the-college-admissions-scandal-11552588402

The tipster who led federal authorities to the biggest college-admissions scam they have ever prosecuted was Morrie Tobin, a Los Angeles financial executive who was being investigated in a securities fraud case, according to a person familiar with the investigation.

Mr. Tobin was being questioned in an alleged pump-and-dump investment scheme—in which people conspire to inflate the price of a stock so they can sell it at a profit—when he offered a tip to federal authorities in an effort to obtain leniency.

The absolute best part is, there's separate college admission for the CREW
team.
We've always known that athletes get special treatement. Just hadn't
realized it went far beyond the top 3 college sports.
There's always a few wealthy alums who were on crew or something else
well outside the top three, so the money's there. Some of those people
are going to be pretty angry about this.

Mostly because now they won't be able to slip their own kids in
bypassing the admissions procedures.

Sounds like I should have told my daughter and son both of whom were
varsity crew in high school to keep it up!

(Somehow both of them managed to graduate university without needing
to...)

Bad, celebrities. Bad.

I saw Huffman's picture. I didn't not recognize her. She must have had a
lot of plastic surgery.
He took tests for them? Didn't I see this on Suits?

One of the news reports said that one of the celebrities told the
testing company that she had hired her own proctor for the exam. Huh?
Whenever I took standardized tests, I had to attend the specified
session and take the test in front of assigned proctor.
"This case is about the widening corruption of elite college admissions
through the steady application of wealth, combined with fraud," said
U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts Andrew Lelling.
"There can be no separate college admission for wealthy, and I will add
there will not be a separate criminal justice system either."
That's nice, but I doubt a lot of poor people commit this crime.

I'm sure the school could have used $500k. Maybe put A/C in the dorms.

Athletes of many sports have long had preferential treatment for
college admission. Heck, Eric Severaid did a piece on it years
ago.

Also, wealthy parents have long bought their kids into college
by a generous 'donation'. The president of IBM admitted
in his memoir that he got into Brown that way (though he was
very thankful to Brown and later donated a lot of his own
money to them.)

Further, there are mediocre private schools that commonly
accept wealthy kids who can't get into good schools.

For private schools, I'm not sure how a 'bribe' like that is
illegal. For private services, people offer 'bribes' for
preferential treatment all the time, commonly known as
tips.

However, falsifying an SAT score would seem to be outright
fraud which would be illegal.

What I don't understand is why there is so much desire to
get into a 'top' school. First off, if a kid is a weak
student, they're gonna struggle in a top school--the workload
will be too fast paced and complex for them. Secondly, plenty
of middle-grade colleges offer a reasonable education if the
kid is willing to work for it.

I hate to use a cliché, but when you cheat, you are only
cheating yourself. A parent who fakes their kid into
college is only hurting the kid for later life. The kid
may end up with a college degree, but out in the _real_
world, they'll quickly fail if they can't do the job.

Can anybody point to a kid who actually didn't get into a particular
college because of this? Some actual athlete who lost a scholarship or
something?

In my day (fifty years ago), even the service academies screwed around
with athletic scholarships. One way was to take academy slots reserved
for students in congressional districts with large minority populations
and give them to athletes the academies wanted to recruit.

I doubt you can ever point to exactly the kid who got axed, but you'd
nevertheless have to assume he exists, merely based on the principle of
Finite Enrollments. Meanwhile, the ultimate proof of the scurrilousness
of all this, imo, is that nobody wants you to talk about it...

Personally, I think that lawsuit is groundless.

If anyone really cares about the real issue of higher education,
the big question is why has private college tuition gone up much
faster than the rate of inflation (like medical costs).

Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Elizabeth Warren told MSNBC
that she has "zero" sympathy for the dozens of parents charged in
what the Justice Department says is the biggest college admissions
scandal it's ever prosecuted.

A number of wealthy parents were charged Tuesday in a $25 million
scam that helped their children gain admission to top schools in the
U.S., according to the DOJ. The list of those charged included
high-level executives and two notable actresses.

Parents involved in the scam allegedly funneled cash into a
"charitable account." The man who pleaded guilty to four charges in
the scam, William Singer, helped the alter students' SAT and ACT
tests and helped parents bribe athletic coaches and universities to
take their kids, even if they didn't play sports, prosecutors said.

Yale University, Georgetown University, Stanford University, the
University of Southern California and Wake Forest University were
among the institutions that accepted children whose parents are
accused in the scam.

The business executives charged by officials include Douglas Hodge,
a former CEO of Pimco; William McGlashan Jr., a senior executive at
TPG Capital; Agustin Huneeus, head of the Huneeus vineyard in Napa
Valley, California; and Gordon Caplan, co-chairman of international
law firm Willkie Farr. Actresses Felicity Huffman of ABC's
"Desperate Housewives" and Lori Loughlin of ABC's "Full House" were
also charged.

The Justice Department said that it believes most of the children
were unaware of the bribery. Prosecutors have not charged any of the
universities or students.

Warren's office did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for
comment.

The one where Warren lied to get ahead. You know... the one where he
can't provide a shred of evidence that what he said ever happened.

Oh, right... that would really apply to ALL of his posts.

So, has Ponchauntus, who lied about being Native America to get an
advantage in college, made any comments yet?
Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Elizabeth Warren told MSNBC
that she has "zero" sympathy for the dozens of parents charged in
what the Justice Department says is the biggest college admissions
scandal it's ever prosecuted.
Of course she doesn't. Shops at Whole Foods got caught lying about her
qualifications, so she has no sympathy for anyone else who gets caught
lying about their qualifications.

Thanks for proving my point. And thanks for changing the follow-up to a
different newsgroup. (Works every time, right moron?)

Also proves what a coward you are.

Even more people (761!) paid big bux so their stupid kids could attend a
good school ...

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/college-cheating-mastermind-says-he-helped-nearly-800-families-admissions-n982666

They can always buy their way out.

The ringleader behind a $25 million college admission scam that
implicated dozens of people, including Hollywood actresses Lori Loughlin
and Felicity Huffman, said he has worked with more than 750 families.

William Rick Singer, who pleaded guilty Tuesday in a Boston federal
court to racketeering, money laundering, conspiracy and obstruction of
justice charges, said in a phone conversation recorded by the FBI that
he helps "the wealthiest families in the U.S. get their kids into school."

Singer said he facilitated 761 "side doors" to admission.

"They want guarantees, they want this thing done. They don't want me
messing around with this thing," he said, according to court documents
unsealed Tuesday. "And so they want in at certain schools."

According to the investigators, parents paid Singer millions to boost
their kids' chances of getting into schools such as Yale University,
Stanford University and Georgetown University by paying people to take
tests for their children, bribing test administrators to allow that to
happen, and bribing college coaches to identify the applicants as athletes.
