This past Saturday, they finally had the season premiere of This Old House
with the new host. Jeez, this guy is bad. I miss Steve already. I mean this
guy is really bad, annoying and a horrible actor.

Bob Villa always came off as an arrogant know-it-all. Steve was much better
IMO. I know he never reached anywhere the stardom of Bob, but he was a much
better host. And definitely better then the new guy. The new guy sounds like
everything he says is written for him in a script and he's reading it off a
teleprompter. I know this is his first week and all, but when everyone else
on the show sounds natural and unrehearsed, this guy really sticks out like
a sore thumb.

I hope he gets better and fast.

What did everyone else think?

Steve Thomas sucked -- he always tried to act like he knew what he was
doing, but never really did. He reminded me of my aunt's intellectual
husband who always tried to be handy around the house, but was an utter
disaster when it came to being handy.

I guess I missed the new one. I saw part of one ep and Steve was there
so it must have been an old rerun as I noticed two eps ran back-to-back.
I used to watch TOH every weekend, but haven't for several months.

Bob Villa was right about leaving this show. Getting tired of looking at how
they build luxurious homes Who the hell can afford these homes..not us
commoners. Makes me sick.

I'm glad to see someone else feels the same way I do, as this
always pissed me off about "This Old House".

PBS, the network for the "people", (and funded with the people's
tax dollars) and all we get to see is Norm overhauling million
dollar homes on Nantucket.

"That's right Bob, with the money the home owners will save on
their water bill by using this solid gold toilet, they'll be able
to afford another maid."

Villa left because of commercial conflicts-he signed a deal with Sears. And now
he renovates million dollar homes in syndication. And gets sued. Conrad Janis
(Mork & Mindy)bought a house he redid in Malibu that had many faults.

They haven't aired any new eps on the NYC stations yet.

How can the new guy be any worse?

Saw the new guy's first episodes ("This Old House" and "Ask This Old
House") and yeah, there's definitely room for improvement, but then
there's been room for improvement for each of the hosts from their
first shows. I think I see what they're going for with this new guy
(who actually appeared as a puzzled homeowner on an episode of "Ask
This Old House" last year) and that's a someone who has some fairly
basic skills but isn't a pro. Villa had been in the business as
someone who bought properties, did renovations and sold them for a
profit. Steve Thomas had done a number of renovations in the past but
at the time of his hiring had been a writer and a sailor. As far as I
can tell Kevin O'Connor (the new guy) comes to the show as a newbie,
with no experience either in broadcasting or in major renovations and
as far as I can tell, that's what the producers wanted.

What I don't understand is why there was a "need" for a replacement.
I know that Villa left in part because his bosses weren't happy about
his outside involvements (with Time-Life Books and possibly as a
spokesman for Craftsman tools), but what was the situation with Thomas
(besides the fact that my mother can't stand the way he looks)?

You have a really intelligent mom. Any home-improvement show host
(note I didn't say hostess) who has a face-lift, eye-tuck, chin-suck,
and every other plastic surgery procedure available somehow loses
credibility.

I haven't seen the new guy yet, but I really liked Steve Thomas - he
wasn't nearly as officious and "I'm so superior" as Vila.

And, plastic surgery makes one lose credibility? That's something I
haven't heard before ... LOL.

I thought the guy was OK. It's clear they were looking for an everyman
homeowner type to balance the experts-they found him. I thought that he did
quite well and I've seen much worse- I'm in TV production.

I like the new guy! He strikes me as a very likeable person and he was
smoother in the 2nd episode. After the last few dozen rennovations
with Steve, where the rennovation for each costs more than the value
of my last two homes, I'm enjoying the small project they are working
on -- a one bedroom home.

Bob Villa started out okay but his arrogance grew along with the size
of the projects. Steve was awkward at first but got better quickly.
So, give this guy a chance. I already like him better than:

Steve + Bob x the Keno twins

But, the latter's show (FIND!) would be more interesting if they
underwent surgery to become conjoined, perhaps at the fingers. It
might make them a little less frantic.

The "everyman" home owner angle appeals to me a lot. After years of
the host pretending he doesn't know something, and then intermittantly
spouting something elitist about aesthetics as if he were an editor
for Architectural Digest, I like the everyman. Good job at selecting
this new guy, PBS.
