Paige Davis bares almost all. According to the tabloid, she "stripped
down to her skivvies on June 20 -- but it was for a good cause. The

‘Trading Spaces' to get makeover

“Trading Spaces” will undergo an extreme makeover this fall.

Second-quarter ratings for TLC's most popular show — hosted by cutie Paige
Davis and produced by Banyan Productions — have plunged 50 percent from the
same period a year ago.

Because of that, the show format will “evolve” when season five launches in
October, says Roger Marmet, TLC's executive vice president and general manager.

“We're loosening the very tight format,” he said. “We want to make the
viewing experience less predictable and more spontaneous. Several of the
elements will be new and different to the audience.”

No details (for competitive reasons), but Marmet says he'll incorporate more
behind-the-scenes peeks into the design process.

The basic “Spaces” structure “that people know and are passionate
about” will not change: Two sets of neighbors design a room in each other's
house over two days, using a designer, a carpenter and a $1,000 budget.

On-air talent stays put, too.

“We're keeping the heart of the format. ‘Spaces' is still our highest-rated
show. We're not looking to throw out the baby with the bathwater.”

“Spaces,” whose episodes debut at 8 p.m. Saturdays, this season averages
more than 12 million viewers per week, counting more than 10 airings. Sixty
original episodes run until September.

Is “Spaces” overexposed?

“We've given the audience what they were looking for — more opportunities
to see the show,” Marmet says. “It's still very strong. We're not looking
to cut back.”

As usual with television, the success of “Spaces” has spawned a host of
imitators.

On TLC, there's “Trading Spaces: Family,” hosted by Joe Farrell, as well as
“Clean Sweep” and “While You Were Out.”

Broadcast-wise, there's ABC's “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” among
others.

Ohhh, her! I've seen the new Fifth Third ads and wondered what show
she was on; I thought she might be one of those made-up celebs they
use for cheaper commercials. Hmm, she's got a cute/perky thing going
on, but nothing to write home about - if she passed me in a mall
parking lot pushing a stroller towards her BMW X5 I'd think nothing of
it. That's likely her appeal on the home shows.

A couple wanted their kitchen redone.
They had Oak cabinets, I believe.. and wanted a 'lighter, brighter' look.

The people were basically 'anti-alcohol'.

The 'helpers' repeatedly told Hildy why these things were no good.

The owners looked like they were gonna hurl when they opened their eyes.


I hope the show paid to have the damage repaired?

Michael Payne is the best Interior Designer on television.

Not just for his classic taste..
but for his ability to take 2 people with different goals
and make them both deliriously happy with the outcome.

His sneakiest trick is to show them 'inferior' choices first,
so they're willing to accept his choice, when he finally
reveals the piece he had in mind.

On a recent show, he actually breezed past the perfect cabinet
and let the woman 'discover' it.

Of course, the camera was set up and aiming at that spot,
the whole time he went crusing by.


He's a tricky little bastard.

i define "credentials" in the design field as a degree in fine arts/design,
and/or ASID certified. according to Hildi's bio on the Trading Spaces website,
she has neither.

This is not to say, she can't call herself a "designer". and THAT was my point.

been told the home owners wanted that sounds mean-spirited. As people
have pointed out she has gone out of her way to alter pieces of
furniture that she's been told not to touch. I know they sign
contracts, but there is no way I would have assisted her in doing some
of the things she's done. Like someone else pointed out she destroyed
a chair that she had been told not to touch and that had sentimental
value. That seems mean spirited to me.

You're probably right. I actually have only been Tivoing TS here
lately, and only episodes that TWOP has recaps for. In fact, that's
WHY I'm Tivoing them, to read the recaps thereof.

Anyhow, the funniest (worst) Hildi room I've seen so far has been this
dining room she painted black (big surprise) and made this utterly
ridiculous Star Trek lighting fixture out of like 50+ (no
exaggeration) of those big clear bathroom/make-up mirror bulbs. Also,
the accessories involved hard boiled eggs. Really. It was horrible.
And she had NO DISCERNIBLE clue how very, very bad it was.

Now just this week I caught "Indiana: Something Road" and Doug
(INTENTIONALLY, I'm convinced) fucked up this living room BAD, without
a second thought, and I'm CONVINCED, ON PURPOSE. It must have been
re-edited because the last 15 minutes were a follow up on what the
home owners had done (or more appropriately, UNDONE) since... The TWOP
recap didn't have any reference to the "revisit"... BTW, the other
decorator was Genavive... who, I think would be cool to party with,
but not to let alter any surfaces in your house.

design and accredited form The American Society of Interior Design (ASID).
Otherwise anyone can hang a shingle out and call themselves a designer. (see

The most common is ASID (American Society of Interior Decorators). The
tests for certification are actually very intense. Anyone that's ever
been paid for a particular craft or trade can call themselves a
"professional".
