Lawsuit Says "Judge Judy" Sends Black Packin'
Posted Dec 31st 2007 11:00AM by TMZ Staff, NTVLand (NTV Land)

An ex-producer for "Judge Judy" is claiming that he was canned for
complaining that black litigants were being 86'd from the show.

The lawsuit, filed in L.A. County Superior Court by former Senior
Producer Jonathan Sebastien, alleges that Randy Douthit -- another
senior producer -- told staffers, "We're not doing any more black
shows," and "I don't want to hear black people arguing."

Sebastien claims when he complained about the alleged whitewashing, he
says Douthit commanded his fellow producers to book "white upscale,
pretty people" for Judge Judy, and to send black litigants to the
"Judge Joe Brown" show. Brown's show is produced by the same company
as "Judy."

Sebastien claims after he objected to the policy, his boss "berated
and mocked him," and fired him on March 30. He is seeking unspecified
damages from the show and CBS Paramount Network Television.

Judge Judy Sheindlin herself isn't named as a defendant. The
spokesperson for "Judge Judy" has no comment.

It's just (low brow) entertainment, like "Survivor" or "Dancing with
the Stars," folks. As such, I think the producers retain whatever
right to skew the entertainment value as they see fit (and to appeal
to their perceived demographic). So, no, it's not representative of
the U.S. judicial system (necessarily), and therefore hardly worth
getting in a snit about. CHANGE THE CHANNEL, it's your best defense.

Bwaahahahaha- "upscale, pretty people"! That's too funny. Have any of
these people actually watched her show? It's rare that you see
anything other than completely worthless scuzzy people. I mean, it's
your standard girlfriend-sues-worthless-exboyfriend, family members
suing family, and stuff like that. Good lord- "upscale"? What a
laugh.

who really gives a chit. It's an entertainment show that's carved out
its own demographics which appeal to its advertisers. If its target
market is turned off, then in turn so will be the advertisers. Making
an issue over the presence of "arguing blacks" is as valid as
protesting the absence of banjo-strumming blondes on BET.

Judge Judy may, indeed, be a racist.

Recently, there was a case involving a minor white girl and an adult
black male.

The girl had given an item to the male. The male claimed the item was
a gift. The girl claimed that the item was not a gift, and the girl
wanted the item back.

The girl came to court with her mother. Judge Judy asked the mother:
What kind of punishment did you give your daughter for talking to this
male? The mother described the punishment.

First of all, the punishment was not relevant to the legal issue at
hand (that is, the rightful owner of the item).
Second of all, I don't know why the mother should punish the girl
simply for talking to this man. They talked. They did not have sex.
However, when Judge Judy asked about the punishment, Judy asked in
such a tone as to suggest that Judy felt that a punishment was
deserved.

Hmmm, did the girl deserve to be punished because she was white and
had become acquainted with a black male? As far as I know, this
acquaintance was platonic. There was no romance.

Also, Judge Judy made a big deal out of the black man's criminal
record. What was his record? He had spent ONE DAY in jail after being
arrested for "disorderly conduct". First of all, I believe that he had
not even been convicted yet. He had made bail after one day in jail,
and he was awaiting trial. Also, anyone who knows about legal issues
knows that "disorderly conduct" is a charge that police routinely use
to mean anything of which police disapprove.
Police routinely arrest people for disorderly conduct simply for
expressing an opinion that police do not like.

So, I hardly think that the man's record is anything to worry about.

Hmmm, was Judy focusing on his criminal record because he was black?

Incidentally, Judge Judy ruled that the item had to be returned to the
girl. Because the girl was a minor, she was not legally able to give
the man a gift.

Regards,

Alex K.
