What Did You Watch? 2024-09-01 (Sunday)

Yesterday, all I got through was:

golf - As expected, Scottie Scheffler was unbeatable in the Tour
Championship, easily winning the FedEx Cup (with a *$25 million*
purse!). But both Collin Morikawa and Sahith Theegala conducted
themselves admirably, for strong second- and third- place finishes.

college football - For some reason, USC was playing LSU(!?).
Apparently, USC actually won with some miraculous last second play that
I didn't see.

I then watched what I think was the one John Mulaney standup special on
Netflix I hadn't seen before, "The Comeback Kid" (2015).

I then watched what I think was the one John Mulaney standup special on
Netflix I hadn't seen before, "The Comeback Kid" (2015).
What did you watch?
I watched:

Go (blu-ray) 1999 crime comedy directed by Doug Liman with a who's who
list of 90s young stars. The plot unfolds over one night but follows
several different groups in interconnected stories. Let's see if I can
summarize the plot, Katie Holmes and Sarah Polley work at a grocery
store. Polley is in desperate need of money. Her coworker asks her to
take his shift so he can take a trip to Vegas and she agrees. Then
Scott Wolf and Jay Mohr show up looking for the coworker so they can buy
some ecstasy from him. Polley gets the bright idea to sale them the
ecstasy instead. She and Holmes go to the local drug dealer's (Timothy
Olyphant) house but don't have enough money so Polley leaves Holmes
behind as collateral. From there the stories continue to branch out
following Polley as she tries to complete the drug deal, Wolf and Mohr
who turn out to not be what they appeared (And they in turn are
hilariously caught up with a cop played by William Fichtner and his wife
played by Jane Krakwoski), Holmes and her adventure with Olphany as well
as the adventures of another group of 90s stars in Vegas. It's a wild
ride that all just works. This has been on my watch list for a very
long time. I finally got around to revisiting it. It held up very well.

The Big Hit (blu-ray) 1998 crime comedy starring Mark Wahlberg as a
hitman with a heart of gold trying to keep his two girlfriends (Lela
Rochon and Chritina Applegate) happy. He and his so-called friends, Lou
Diamond Phillips, Bokeem Woodbine and Antonio Sabàto Jr. all work for
Avery Brooks (who chews the scenery like you wouldn't believe). The
plot kicks off when his friends decide to take a side job and kidnap a
young woman. When they need somewhere to stash her the always agreeable
Wahlberg agrees to hide her for them. But what they don't realize is
the woman they kidnap just so happens to be their boss's god daughter
and he intends to track down and kill those responsible. Fortunately,
he has Wahlberg and his team to track down the people responsible. What
could go wrong? I watched this all the time when it first came out, but
haven't watched it since the late 90s. I've been looking forward to
watching it again and pairing it with "Go." It held up great. And the
best part was probable the trace buster, the trace buster buster, the
trace buster buster buster! And so on. I had completely forgotten
about that. Those trace buster scenes make the movie!

A Simple Plan (TCM) 1998 crime movie directed by Sam Raimi and starring
Bill Paxton and Billo Bob Thornton as two down on their luck brothers
who find a crashed plane with 4 million dollars in cash. They decide to
keep the money but to do so a lot of people are going to have to die!
OK movie that was clearly inspired by "Fargo."

The Thomas Crown Affair (TCM) 1968 heist movie starring Steve McQueen as
a rich man who decides to organize a bank robbery for kicks. Faye
Dunaway also stars as the bank insurance investigator hot on his trail
who falls in love with him and has to decide between love and her job.
I've never definitely never watched this movie before now. It was OK.
But probably what I was most fascinated by was a young Faye Dunaway who
while I've definitely seen her in other movies, I mostly know from
"Supergirl." But it was still weird seeing a young "Selena" staring as
the love interest in a movie.

I was all set to watch "The Saint" next saved on my DVR, but HBO aired
it in the wrong aspect ratio. :-/ So, I hit delete and moved on. Then
I looked at what else I had on my DVR. I hit play on "Dog Day
Afternoon," I figured another bank heist movie might work. Then after
giving it some thought and looking at the runtime, I hit delete less
than a minute in. Won't miss that one. I scoured my DVR until I
finally settled on watching:

Love Lies Bleeding (HBO) This time in the correct aspect ratio! But
it's from A24. Warning, Warning, Warning! A24 is a huge red flag! But
it's in the right aspect ratio...So I'll give it a shot. This is a 2024
movie starring Kristen Stewart as the manager (I guess) of a local gym
in the 80s. She falls for a female body builder (Katy O'Brian) who
starts to take steroids and experience homicidal roid rage as a result.
Ed Harris also stars as Stewart's father who is a crime boss under
investigation by the FBI and might just make a good patsy for Stewart's
girlfriend to blame things on. That is if he isn't already a step ahead
of them. Overall, I guess the movie was OK, but it was full of the
usual A24 nonsense. Those people really don't like making normal movies!

This is a good-looking movie, the star of which is Oscar-winning "The
Windmills of Your Mind" by Michel Legrand.

Vicki (Dunaway) has no motivation for any of her actions, except lust
for Thomas (McQueen). This is noted in much of the dialogue with her
colleagues. Apparently this was not supposed to bother the audience but
it's always annoyed me. Jack Weston as Erwin is memorable.

The 1999 film had fewer massive plot holes and some memorable sex
scenes. I saw it once in theater and haven't wanted to watch again.

I know I saw it at least once before and I'm sure I liked it. It's the
movie where Pacino keeps shouting, "Attica." But it's been sitting on my
DVR for several months and I've had zero interest in watching it. And
on a weekend when I'm literally watching a bunch of bank heist movies if
I still can't drum up any interest I'm never going too! LOL. Maybe I
could have held on to it and tried to pair it with Inside Man, but I
don't think it was going to go with anything. I just didn't have it in
me to sit through it again.

Romeo Must Die is a much for entertaining movie than Love Lies Bleeding.
I'm not necessarily it's a technically better movie, but between the
two I know which one I'd rather sit through again.

I was watching John Q with Denzel Washington a few days ago and thought
it would be nicely paired with Dog Day Afternoon. Instead of robbing a
bank Denzel takes over a hospital to force them to perform a heart
transplant for his dying son. A satisfying parable if you've ever been
frustrated with HMO and insurance bureaucracies.

That's a good pairing, or make it a triple. I'm not actually sure if
I've ever watched John Q or not, yet I'm sure I know everything that's
going to happen in that movie even if I've never watched it before.

Some movies you don't actually need to watch to know what's going to
happen. LOL

You made me look it up. It says she was in a pilot in 2013 that wasn't
sold to series. They added enough footage for a two-hour tv movie. Roger
Moore produced. She played Patricia Holm, the girlfriend from some of
the novels but never used on tv or movies.
And she looks fabulous

My BFF’s mom was a big Saint fan so we were always grabbing a book or a
videotape or anything we happened to see on the subject for her. She hated
the Val Kilmer movie as did her two kids. I mercifully slept through most
of it, although I watched it later and wished I hadn’t.

Dumbest moment? He’s in a full head, rubber mask like in Mission Impossible
and he gets wounded in the scalp and the world‘s stupidest nuclear
scientist patches him up without noticing she’s patching up a rubber skull
cap.

As I recall the very best thing in the entire film was that he uses a
series of aliases and they all have the initials S.T. like Simon Templar.
And I’m serious, that’s literally the best part of the movie.

I was all set to watch "The Saint" next saved on my DVR, but HBO aired
it in the wrong aspect ratio. :-/ So, I hit delete and moved on.
Which version? The Val Kilmer movie is a crime against humanity. The 2017
movie is worth it just for Eliza Dushku. And then there are the series of
movies from the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s as well as several more obscure
films with that title as well as at least three TV series. And the movies
compiled from said TV series…

I recorded the Val Kilmer version. I think I probably rented it once
back when it first came out, but I have no memory of the movie and it's
possible I've never watched it before. Other than the TV show (which
I've never watched) I had no idea there were other versions. Nothing
else popped up when I searched to see if I could stream it, but I dug a
little deeper and did see the Dushku version for sale from Xfinity.

I watched the Val Kilmer version long ago. I can remember enough to
know the movie wasn't great. I remember the Dushku version coming up
before in discussion but don't think I ever got around to watching it.

Wow. I had *no* idea it was such a huge franchise. And looks like a

there wa a spinoff or something with his nephew called something like
"Son of The Saint". I distinctly remember seeing him in speedos during
the opening credits!

There's Return of the Saint with Ian Ogilviey. It's a reboot with a new
actor.
More than speedos, he's dark, naked and very, very pale

There were some hott chycks in this, if the IMDb pics are to be believed!!
It was on for one season in the '70s on ITV. CBS aired it during late
night. I watched it as a kid. Wasn't bad. They may have considered
making him "son of", but what we got on tv was the original character in
new contemporary stories.

It was also a radio program for 8 seasons on, what, four networks, in
which Vincent Price played the character for a season or two.

golf - As expected, Scottie Scheffler was unbeatable in the Tour
Championship, easily winning the FedEx Cup (with a *$25 million*

Apparently, USC actually won with some miraculous last second play that
I didn't see.
College football is weirded out this year, new conference lineups and
new rules like a 2-minute "warning" break before the end of the first
half. Michigan is going to be playing Texas on Sept. 7 which seems just
as strange.

That was a good game though, I was pulling for LSU since I'm in the eastern US.
