Post by Ian J. Ballgolf - As expected, Scottie Scheffler was unbeatable in the Tour
Championship, easily winning the FedEx Cup (with a *$25 million*
purse!). But both Collin Morikawa and Sahith Theegala conducted
themselves admirably, for strong second- and third- place finishes.
college football - For some reason, USC was playing LSU(!?). Apparently,
USC actually won with some miraculous last second play that I didn't see.
I then watched what I think was the one John Mulaney standup special on
Netflix I hadn't seen before, "The Comeback Kid" (2015).
What did you watch?
I watched:
Go (blu-ray) 1999 crime comedy directed by Doug Liman with a who's who
list of 90s young stars. The plot unfolds over one night but follows
several different groups in interconnected stories. Let's see if I can
summarize the plot, Katie Holmes and Sarah Polley work at a grocery
store. Polley is in desperate need of money. Her coworker asks her to
take his shift so he can take a trip to Vegas and she agrees. Then
Scott Wolf and Jay Mohr show up looking for the coworker so they can buy
some ecstasy from him. Polley gets the bright idea to sale them the
ecstasy instead. She and Holmes go to the local drug dealer's (Timothy
Olyphant) house but don't have enough money so Polley leaves Holmes
behind as collateral. From there the stories continue to branch out
following Polley as she tries to complete the drug deal, Wolf and Mohr
who turn out to not be what they appeared (And they in turn are
hilariously caught up with a cop played by William Fichtner and his wife
played by Jane Krakwoski), Holmes and her adventure with Olphany as well
as the adventures of another group of 90s stars in Vegas. It's a wild
ride that all just works. This has been on my watch list for a very
long time. I finally got around to revisiting it. It held up very well.
The Big Hit (blu-ray) 1998 crime comedy starring Mark Wahlberg as a
hitman with a heart of gold trying to keep his two girlfriends (Lela
Rochon and Chritina Applegate) happy. He and his so-called friends, Lou
Diamond Phillips, Bokeem Woodbine and Antonio Sabàto Jr. all work for
Avery Brooks (who chews the scenery like you wouldn't believe). The
plot kicks off when his friends decide to take a side job and kidnap a
young woman. When they need somewhere to stash her the always agreeable
Wahlberg agrees to hide her for them. But what they don't realize is
the woman they kidnap just so happens to be their boss's god daughter
and he intends to track down and kill those responsible. Fortunately,
he has Wahlberg and his team to track down the people responsible. What
could go wrong? I watched this all the time when it first came out, but
haven't watched it since the late 90s. I've been looking forward to
watching it again and pairing it with "Go." It held up great. And the
best part was probable the trace buster, the trace buster buster, the
trace buster buster buster! And so on. I had completely forgotten
about that. Those trace buster scenes make the movie!
A Simple Plan (TCM) 1998 crime movie directed by Sam Raimi and starring
Bill Paxton and Billo Bob Thornton as two down on their luck brothers
who find a crashed plane with 4 million dollars in cash. They decide to
keep the money but to do so a lot of people are going to have to die!
OK movie that was clearly inspired by "Fargo."
The Thomas Crown Affair (TCM) 1968 heist movie starring Steve McQueen as
a rich man who decides to organize a bank robbery for kicks. Faye
Dunaway also stars as the bank insurance investigator hot on his trail
who falls in love with him and has to decide between love and her job.
I've never definitely never watched this movie before now. It was OK.
But probably what I was most fascinated by was a young Faye Dunaway who
while I've definitely seen her in other movies, I mostly know from
"Supergirl." But it was still weird seeing a young "Selena" staring as
the love interest in a movie.
I was all set to watch "The Saint" next saved on my DVR, but HBO aired
it in the wrong aspect ratio. :-/ So, I hit delete and moved on. Then
I looked at what else I had on my DVR. I hit play on "Dog Day
Afternoon," I figured another bank heist movie might work. Then after
giving it some thought and looking at the runtime, I hit delete less
than a minute in. Won't miss that one. I scoured my DVR until I
finally settled on watching:
Love Lies Bleeding (HBO) This time in the correct aspect ratio! But
it's from A24. Warning, Warning, Warning! A24 is a huge red flag! But
it's in the right aspect ratio...So I'll give it a shot. This is a 2024
movie starring Kristen Stewart as the manager (I guess) of a local gym
in the 80s. She falls for a female body builder (Katy O'Brian) who
starts to take steroids and experience homicidal roid rage as a result.
Ed Harris also stars as Stewart's father who is a crime boss under
investigation by the FBI and might just make a good patsy for Stewart's
girlfriend to blame things on. That is if he isn't already a step ahead
of them. Overall, I guess the movie was OK, but it was full of the
usual A24 nonsense. Those people really don't like making normal movies!
