I watched a very interesting Triggernometry podcast last night that
talked about the Middle East, particularly Iran's role in the trouble.
The guest was a lawyer turned activist who is herself Iranian, Elica Le
Bon. She explained the history of the Iranian Revolution that toppled
the Shah and installed the Ayatollah Khomeini and revealed something I'd
never heard before: Jimmy Carter played an active role in deposing the
Shah and enabling the Ayatollah to take over.

[1 hour]

It's a pleasure to hear from Iranian dissidents for a change rather than
from the regime's proxies who are behind all the protests on campuses
and street corners.

"Iran is Jimmy Carter's fault"

Well, of course. He is history's greatest monster after all.

Part of the Shah's downfall is due to the modernization efforts he was promoting,
an aspect of which was the availability of low cost audio cassette tape players
in Iran.

The fundie Muslims smuggled in tapes of the Ayatollah's rantings and these were
widely sistributed among the population, which at the time was still mostly poorly
educated backwoods farmers, and used these taped recordings to propagandize
the Iranian people.
