A rather bizarre musical episode that pretty thoroughly misfires. Lip
service is paid to the song and dance numbers being musical
hallucinations Cloris Leachman is experiencing due to a brain bleed, but
they're singing *before* she arrives in town, so I don't know what they
were going for. Mostly it served to remind how much better other shows
(like Psych) did this.

Hank decides maybe he shouldn't find love but should do something else,
Paige is pregnant, Jeremiah has a date with JK Rowling, Eddie gets
married, Boris is mysteriously absent, Divya hears from John Hopkins.
It doesn't seem to occur to Hank that Boris suffers Evan running the
hospital as a way to sweeten the deal of keeping Hank on hand as his
personal physician, and that if Hank goes away Evan would be fired the
next day. Lots of old patients show up. At least it was Jill free.

I was wondering if you had given up on the show when you never
discussed it. It was truly a strange show, but it proved that the
women of the show are much better singers than the men.

Yes, no Jill, but you can see it's all leading that way. Jill doesn't
have a boyfriend and recently visited Hank and talked about how great
the change in her life has been. Hank had found a dream house but the
deal fell through and now he's feeling like he needs to change his
life. Now he could decide to become Hillary instead of Hank but I
don't see the show going that way.

I heard Jill trips and falls into a volcano in the final episode but he'd
never want to watch that.

Yeah, he's either headed back to the ER or to Jill.

An ER in Africa with Jill!

Yeah, I suspect either that or she moves back and they take over
Hampton's, with "they take over the ER he used to run in NYC" being my
distant third choice.

Yes! She has an amazing voice. I'm always amazed at how so many actors
have great singing voices. She was great. I was also a bit surprised
by Mrs Newberg just because I have only seen (as far as I know) the
actress in this one role.

She has a Tony, Best Actress in a Musical, Grey Gardens, 2007

She has a lot of tv credits, even some main casts, on shows I mostly
don't watch.

Yes, that lullaby at the beginning was fabulous. I couldn't believe it
was her singing.

I actually thought the rest of the episode was OK. It's not like this is
a great show to begin with, it's just a light diversion, and this was a
fun change of pace. Maybe doing it as the penultimate episode was the
wrong time, though.

But getting Cloris Leachman was great.

I thought the musical format was fine. They obviously wanted to do
something splashy and fun before they packed up the tent, but they
wanted to do something else with the last episode, so they did the
extravaganza in the penultimate. I didn't have any problem with the
hallucination framework, because frankly, musicals almost never feel the
need for justification anyway.

They were convincing the audience of its senility for sticking with
this bad show all this time.

Hank decides maybe he shouldn't find love but should do something else,
100% agree, given that he's been written as the world's dullest date.

Paige is pregnant, Jeremiah has a date with JK Rowling,
Hehehehehehe

She better not turn Gandolf ghey...
Post by anim8rfsk
Eddie gets married,
Eddie was, oddly, not horrid and I was a little sympathetic. I thought
both he and Evan had realistic points of view in their conflict.
Post by anim8rfsk
Boris is mysteriously absent,
Unlike the rest of them, Campbell Scott can find steady work.
Post by anim8rfsk
Divya hears from John Hopkins. It doesn't seem to occur to Hank that
Boris suffers Evan running the hospital as a way to sweeten the deal of
keeping Hank on hand as his personal physician, and that if Hank goes
away Evan would be fired the next day. Lots of old patients show up.
At least it was Jill free.
Lots of incongruous stuff:

1) No one in his right mind would allow Mark Feuerstein to sing theatrically.
He was terrible. Paulo Costanzo was better but not great. Reshma Shetty
did quite well.

2) Boris doesn't need a restraining order against Eddie as his
paramilitary guards are ordered to shoot him on sight. Yet Eddie got
married on Boris's estate?

3) As I said, neither Eddie nor Evan pissed me off and the way their
conflict was handled was decent drama, actually requiring some acting
on Paulo Costanzo's part. Never bought for a minute Mark Feuerstein
simply forgiving Eddie, but he almost never makes an effort to act.

4) Reshma Shetty's performance was off, sigh.

5) I felt sorry for Cloris Leachman, who must have been 89 when this
was filmed. At her age, her roles are nothing more than dying women
or ill women. Oh well. At least they gave her a few lines that she
could add some humor to. She can get better roles.

6) The music was cliche-ridden dreck. Producers seem to do these
musical episodes that they know the audience will hate during the
last season, when they've already received the episode order and
can deliver anything without network notes. This is why they never
do it in first season.

7) I'd say some in the cast should stick with acting and not singing,
but that's debateable.

Eddie gets married . . .
I guess Mrs. Newberg was supposed to be Jewish, and that was supposed to
be a Jewish wedding. There's a chupa and Eddie smashes the glass, but
there weren't any yalmulkes and...

The general was the rabbi? What the hell? That guy looked and sounded like
Bob Gunton.
