What did you watch?
Hey, thanks for asking!

A multi day catch up, not just Thursssday.

Laden with backstory

So over the weekend phone service went out as it does several times a year.
This causes my burglar alarm to go off to report that the phone line has
been cut to the house until you push the reset, and that only works for an
hour and it starts going off again. The fix requires getting on a step
ladder to pull a wire out of the alarm box in the house, which I am no
longer capable of doing.

First appointment was Wednesday. So I spent the next 72 hours with the
alarm going off every hour.

Beep beep beep beep beep.

At one point a bird on the chimney decided the alarm was its mother and
started replying.

Beep chirp beep chirp beep chirp beep chirp beep chirp.

So that was fun.

The good news is that after three weeks at home I finally found where my
friends put the iPad! So I’m still watching TV from the recliner but it’s a
much larger image than holding up the iPhone.

Disney still doesn’t work But Hulu does.

After they fixed my alarm, I decided to celebrate by treating myself to
lobster. Angie’s lobster which specializes in selling under $10 lobster
rolls delivers but… They no longer serve lobster. WTF?

Mason lobster still sells lobster. And they had a BOGO special, buy one get
one free. So I bought one and they automatically gave me two. Then they
waved an offer in front of my face and said if I bought a third they’d give
me $11 off so I bought a third and they automatically gave me a fourth. So
I got four lobster rolls for the price of one and a half.

What has this to do with television you might ask? Well for buying four
lobster rolls, Uber eats gave me three months of Starz. So I’ve got that
going for me. And then apparently for accepting three months of discount
Starz they offered me half price max/Starz bundle which I didn’t bother
with.

So suddenly, I had additional outlets I could watch and a bigger screen.
Now, let’s see if I can figure out what I watched…

I watched two Bond movies because they were in the Plex 50 greatest
submarine movies rotation. The World Is Not Enough and The Spy Who Loved
Me.

On the Hulu, I finished off the last few episodes of season one of Only
Murderers in a Smallville Town. I was completely underwhelmed. Kristen
crook is playing the same horrible character she did in Smallville blaming
the guy she loves for stuff that’s not his fault. I seriously doubt I’ll
watch season two.

I watched season three and half of season four of Vienna Blood. Jessica De
Goew left the series at the end of season one and her character was recast.
Then the character left at the end of season two. Season three is worse for
her absence. The show continues to be stuck in the rut that they only
investigate murders of people they already know.

Season four starts with a two-parter that supposed to be funny at least in
part one and is really weird. The back half of season four is supposed to
have dropped a few days ago but hasn’t made it to the gray yet. Those of
you who have watched the series to date will find no surprise whatsoever
when the secret identity of the mad killer is revealed, nor will they find
any surprise when it turns out that’s false and absolutely will there be no
surprise whatsoever in the real identity of the mad killer.

Over on the Starz, I watched the extended version of Jurassic World
Dominion with 15 more minutes of CGI dinosaurs. The only Jurassic movie
Starz doesn’t seem to have is the one with Katie McGrath. Snarl. I added a
bunch of stuff like the transporter movies to my watchlist. Starz has
commercials at the front and cuts off the end credits to show you some
movie you didn’t ask for. I definitely won’t be keeping it after the promo
period is done. But for the next 90 days, I won’t be able to say. “Nobody
gets Starz“ anymore. Ian will still say it, but he’ll be wrong.

oh, you may remember that Disney doesn’t work on the iPad because they
require you to have the very newest operating system. Well, Starz pulled
the same crap on me but then it popped up and said would you like to get an
earlier version of the app that does work on your device? So I did and that
works and how much smarter is Starz than Disney?

What did you watch?
Yesterday was my last meeting before classes start next week. So I
decided to focus a little more on movies (off Tubi), and I ended up only
watching one soap:

soaps: DOOL - Wed's ep. Ha! Stephanie admits to Alex that she wanted to
be with him all along (I *knew* it!), and they were sort of "working
through their stuff" when Joy (who won't see this coming!) arrives and
drags Alex off to see Bonnie (who wasn't in this ep) in the hospital.
Earlier, Joy talks over Bonnie's situation with Kate (Kate, of course,
is trying to blame Bonnie!), and then Joy admits that Alex is the only
person in Salem who has been decent to her (wait until she finds out
about Alex and Stephanie!!)... Otherwise it was "soap sabotage" stuff -
Jada questions Kerry, and can't tie him to the Bonnie stuff (or the
poisoned cupcakes). They "show us" (but don't show us the face of)
someone "crossing Bonnie" of their list, and it looks like Alex may be
their next target - as this doesn't seem to be Hattie, I can't figure
out who this is.

Then I watched two (disappointing!) movies off Tubi:

Night Blooms (Tubi) - A 2022 Canadian flick - this is pretty typical of
Canadian indie flicks, portraying Canada as a pathetic country filled
with pathetic youth and pathetic adults/parents. (Yes, *everyone* is
pathetic in this film - there's not on non-pathetic character!) The only
wrinkle is that this is set in the 1990s - so is Canada even more
pathetic now?!
P.S. Filmed in Nova Scotia, just to make it even more pathetic(!?!).
Anyway, I watched this because it stars Jessica Clement, and as I
expected she's the best thing about this film by far - her character is
also pathetic, but at least Clement has the ability to attack the role
with gusto - Clement really does deserve more and higher profile roles:
she recently had a memorable guest stint on "Cross".
Ostensibly, this is about how Clement's 17-year old character
targets and seduces her bestie's (Alexandra McDonald, not to be confused
with the superior Allie MacDonald who hasn't seen to done much in the
last 5 years or so...) father, played by Nick Stahl (and, wow - he looks
old now!). Of course, this leads to disaster for all involved. But,
they're all rundown pathetic Canadians anyway, so who cares?!
And, being a Canadian indie, they of course add unnecessary
elements, like how Clement's character is seemingly guided(?)/haunted(?)
by an EVOL! "spirit woman" who looks like a hipster lesbian(!?!).
So, this flick was good for Clement, but bad for everything else,
and I don't think I would recommend this even for fans of Jessica Clement.

Final Girl: Halloween (Tubi) - I found most of this supposed "horror"
("psychological horror"?) to be quite mild. I guess that's another way
of saying it's actually very "mid"...
That is, until the ending, when I thought the whole film fell apart.
The set up is this: high school girl (Krystal Lynn, a redhead though
not quite as attractive a redhead as the similarly named redhead
Stephanie Lynn from "Little Black Lie" that I watched recently...)
survives a slaughter at a house party where masked-killer kills everyone
else, including her boyfriend, but not her.
This is an OK set-up, though as a horror "slaughter", this opening
sequence is undeniably "mild" (or listless/lacking in urgency or proper
horror atmosphere!).
The problem is everything that comes after - her friends seem
generally unsupportive, and the other kids at the highschool are so mean
and cruel to her that it defies believability.
I also disliked most of the casting - for example, I didn't believe
for a minute that the actors cast as her parents would have produced
this pale redheaded daughter! (Get the basics right, people!)
Once back to school, the killer continues killing, and then it
becomes a mystery to figure out who the masked-killer is. Meanwhile, the
final girl's mean father stonewalls the poor downtrodden detective on
the case (who is paired with an idiot "comedy relief" uniformed cop,
which was another discordant element of this film!).
But the real problem is that this falls apart with the ending.
Basically, almost this entire same premise was covered, and covered
*much better*, back in the 2015 film "Last Girl Standing" - now that
film actually delved much more deeply into the psychological horror
aspects, and was substantially better in delivering its ending.
I did like a couple of the supporting players here: Grace Winters
(no picture on IMDb, despite having a decent-sized filmography) as one
of the final girl's besties, and Nathaniel Hinson as the slacker
(neighbor?) dude who has an obvious crush on the final girl. No one else
really stood out here.
Anyway, if you want this kind of flick, skip this one, and go with
the much more harrowing "Last Girl Standing".

I think I have. It was Whitley! B&S was her beloved soap, she hates the
recasting, etc. Spoilers hint that she'll be back and maybe she was
discharged or escaped from Bayview.

With any luck, she'll only be on 2 or 3 episodes to wrap up this
storyline. I'm intrigued by the new character that pops up on today's

What did you watch?
I watched:

Scent of a Woman (TCM) 1992 drama starring Chris O'Donnell as a kid
attending an elite prep school on scholarship. He witnesses some of the
rich kids playing a prank that really upsets the headmaster and the
headmaster demands O'Donnell tell on the kids or else. But the main
story involves O'Donnell being hired to look after Al Pacino who plays
an obnoxious newly blind ex-solider who is taking taking the loss of his
eyesight very well. Pacino tricks O'Donnell into joining him on a trip
to New York where Pacino mentors O'Donnell teaching him life lessons,
whether O'Donnell wants him to or not. This is one of those movies that
I'm sure I never saw it before, but thanks to endless clips on TV, it
felt like I have seen it before. In particular I kept waiting for the
courtroom scene from all the clips, and when it finally happened, they
weren't even in a real courtroom.

Severance (AppleTV+) - "Goodbye, Mrs. Selvig" - Season 2, episode 2,
which once again picks up with the events of the finale, but this time
it shows the events from the perspective of the outside workers. And
like I suspected the inside workers were lied too about what really
happened.

Conclave (Peacock) New movie starring Ralph Fiennes as a cardinal
leading a conclave to elect a new Pope. I was eager watch this,
especially after if just received so many Academy Award nominations,
including Best Picture. But now that I've watched it, it seems really
overrated. Sure the acting is fine, and the story is OK, I guess. But
I just don't get all the acclaim. At least it's free to stream, if you
have Peacock.

What did you watch?
Yesterday was my last meeting before classes start next week. So I
decided to focus a little more on movies (off Tubi), and I ended up only
soaps: DOOL - Wed's ep.
Anyway, I watched this because it stars Jessica Clement, and as I
expected she's the best thing about this film by far - her character is
also pathetic, but at least Clement has the ability to attack the role
she recently had a memorable guest stint on "Cross".
Final Girl: Halloween (Tubi) - I found most of this supposed
"horror" ("psychological horror"?) to be quite mild. I guess that's
another way of saying it's actually very "mid"...
